Lord, if you wish, you can make me clean.
I remember mother during my teenage years would order us:”I will be gone for days. And I want to return to a clean house.” And this: “Visitors will be arriving, let’s do a general house cleaning.”
Cleanliness is next to Godliness.
In today’s gospel, Jesus cured a man of one of the dreaded diseases even today – leprosy. And Jesus just “willed” it and in an instant, the man was clean.
What does this tell me?
It is easy to be physically clean. Spiritual cleanliness is another thing. We can’t do it alone. It takes willingness from us and from God. We can’t be spiritually clean by our own efforts alone. It requires God’s grace to achieve it. The man beg Jesus to be cured. And Jesus told him, “I do will it. Be made clean.”
Lord, I also want to be clean – please will it, too. I want to be cured of a sick mind and heart filled with evil intentions. So that I may be worthy to be called one of your followers. So that I may be worthy to belong in your kingdom.
