Repay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.
Mark 12: 13-17
Today’s Gospel shows the Lord Jesus’ respect for human authority. The Lord saw the need for the people to pay the taxes due for the government. Tax revenue is the lifeblood of a government, without it, it will cease to exist. And imagine a nation without any form of government ruling over its occupants, there would be no social order since there are no laws to abide by.
A coin bears the image of a government leader and it is only rightful to give some of it back to the system. But the Lord also reminds us today that the Almighty Father imprinted his image on us so we belong to Him, and it is only necessary that we give back a portion of ourselves to God our creator. How much of ourselves do we offer to God?
Lord, thank you for reminding me today that I belong to God, that I was created in his image and bore this divine imprint in my soul. May I willingly and wholeheartedly give back to the Father what is due to Him, and there is no greater repayment other than myself and my obedience to His will. Here I am, Lord. Amen.
