“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

Matthew 5:3 NIV

In one of pastor Rick Warren’s sermon, I learned the meaning of the phrase “poor in spirit”. It means “spiritual helplessness” – acknowledging to ourselves our inadequacy because of the absence of God in our lives. Admitting to ourselves that we need God in our lives. So the phrase “Blessed are the poor in spirit” is the same as saying “Blessed are those who need God”. The statement calls for a total dependence on  God. Depending on God for His wisdom, His strength, His defense, His timing and His wealth. And not relying on ours. Most of our failures in life are the result of following our ”gut feelings” instead of “God’s words”. When we surrender our weaknesses to God, that’s when his great power works its best for our good. There is a season for everything. God gives the best to those who patiently wait. We don’t have to answer our own prayers. Let us always trust God’s timing. Whenever we let go and let God, we are assured of our daily “heaven”. We know that “heaven” for us is a joyful life, a peaceful life, a blessed life, a life in God’s grace and love.
